The narrow view of the deception of unbelief
All sin and every struggle with it in our lives comes from ignorance of and unbelief in the person and work of Jesus Christ. All the sinful states of our hearts are owing to unbelief in God’s super abounding willingness and ability in Christ Jesus to work for us in every situation of life so that everything turns out for our good.
Anxiety, misplaced shame, indifference, regret, covetousness, envy, lust, bitterness, impatience, despondency, depression, pride, and the continual falling into sin; these are all sprouts from the root of unbelief in the point and the promises of God for our lives.
A heart that loves anything other than God is a heart that pins its hopes, and pursues its pleasure, and puts its trust in what is other than God. It is a heart that places its faith (belief-trust-confidence-assurance) in something or someone else, believing that that other thing or person will meet your need and make you happy. The goal of your life is to glorify God –nothing dishonors and offends God more than not to believe what He says.
Our lives are not chaotic. Things concerning us are not from God’s standpoint in chaos. God’s clear, sure thoughts and purpose is actively at work in our lives (Romans 8:14-18, 29-30).
Conformed to the image of the son-this is the foundation of all things-the eternal and establishing thoughts of God concerning His people. This is God’s fixed, determined purpose for your life clearly defined. Conformed to the image of the son-that is the basic, all governing thought of God where His people are concerned. That is at the root of our present experiences, our trial, our suffering. God is at work upon you and me with this one thing in view: CONFORMITY TO THE SON!
It is the underlying, undergirding fact, coming right back before time, foreknown, foreordained. It is this for which God is working all things for good to those who are called according to His purpose (V28). What is the good of all your suffering and trial? That God is reproducing His son in us. His son is his hope, and his ultimate glory is to be revealed manifestly in his children in terms of Son-ship (Romans 8:19-25).
Your conformity to the son is the hope of all creation-subjected to vanity in hope-the hope is in God’s son, and the hope of the manifestation of that son in God’s children Christ in you the hope of GLORY (Colossians 1:12-29)
Look at the place where for this time-GOD HAS PUT YOU-the circumstances in which he has called you to live your life and do not strain to get out of it, or to be bitter concerning it. Recognize that if you are the Lord’s-if you love God and are called according to his purpose. God is seeking to do something in you and with you by means of the conditions of the present situation.
You will only defeat God’s end in your life if you try to get out and will fail to recognize and accept what he is seeking to do. It is the chafing, impatient rebellion of ingratitude that is constantly looking for a way of escape. It is the rebellion of living in another mental world of your own creating, in which you would do and be this and that, and as a consequence miss all that God intends for his glory and yours.
It is God’s thoughts that relates to you as one of his own and that thought is, that through the conditions and sufferings of our lives he should develop in us the features of his son. God is doing something which is other than the features of the all too familiar imposter in you. Make no mistake about this: It is that beast in you that is screaming and controlling you with its O WOE WITH ME!!! (ingratitude, anxiety, sadness, depression, regret, envy, bitterness, impatience, despondency, pride, covetousness, and lust).
The Spirit of God makes intercession for you according to God’s design (Hebrews 2:9-11; 5:7-9).
The point of suffering is so that we may be conformed to the image of his son. God is going to use all conditions to that end.
“Tragically there are multitudes of the Lord’s people who need a world shattering. So caught up in the pointlessness of false Christianity with its whole structure and system-that nothing but that which will overthrow, disintegrate and destroy, and will raise serious questions about what one has accepted as truth will bring them to the place where the Spirit of God can begin really to do the work which he has come to do in them”.
Christ was perfected through suffering
